FOR THOSE sans A GREEN THUMB….the likes of roses and of orchids suggest fragile and temperamental natures too difficult to contemplate for most. They also suggest hard work, the white glove treatment and great expense, but, this is NOT always the case. Of all the plants in my house and garden the orchid requires the least, in fact, almost begs neglect and yet, a beautiful white phaleonopsis, or moth orchid, may cost $75. An orchid can hold its bloom for up to three or four months. Then a rest for almost equal time will restore it until it is ready to flower again. One of the most satisfying moments in the life of your orchid is witnessing the emergence of new buds. This is a ‘cheap thrill’ moment for a gardener.

Timing is everything as Patrick Blanc will tell you. In 1982 when he made a vertical garden for a museum it was a bust, no one was interested. Twelve years later in the south of France it was a completely different story. In 1994 Patrick started on a dramatic rise to gardening fame that on a chart would resemble one of his gardens – straight up. Experimenting with plants at an early age led to a career as a botanist. Don’t let the last name fool you, his hair is in various shades of green, he wears green leather laceups and of course, his gardens – there’s nothing ‘blanc’ about him. He is animated and enthusiastic when speaking about his metier de verdure. Opening The New York Botanical Gardens Orchid Show which runs until April 22nd, Patrick filled the auditorium twice with audiences rapt with attention, as he paced on the stage, spoke in breathless French tinged English and delivered two hours of information in one.
Spring 2012 is abloom with orchids from catwalks to APPS. Peter Som channeled the flora and created an explosive fuchsia print, and Tom Ford entered the world of fragrance with Black Orchid which was consistent with the allure of his clothing designs. The rarity of the flower itself is fully expressed in this elegant, powerful and intoxicating fragrance. To further your knowledge take a look at the ORCHID NOTEBOOK APP and study it for tips on propagation and care.
We will always wonder about the magic that sometimes seems airborne and inspires us. Wherever it comes from, I’ll take that inspiration.
